One of the fashion trends for men this fall is the neckerchief.
Perhaps your first question is, what exactly is a neckerchief? Well, it’s kind of in between a scarf and a handkerchief. Sort of a square scarf if you will. And it’s actually a part of the official Cub Scout uniform as well.
So if you’re a man trying to be trendy, and you’re not a Cub Scout, is the neckerchief for you? Well, that depends. While the neckerchief is definitely making a comeback, that doesn’t mean it’s for everyone. The good thing about the neckerchief is that it can be worn with just about any kind of clothing and can be tied in a variety of ways to create a unique and individual look.
The appeal of the neckerchief for those who wear them is that it spices up just about any outfit since its being worn as a fashion statement, and not as an article of clothing to provide protection against the weather like a traditional scarf. It’s also considered a fool proof accessory that enhances a basic outfit such as a t-shirt and skinny jeans. They’re also easy to find, as almost every store has a scarf section, and come in a variety of patterns, colors, and designs.
So if you’re going to wear one, the most important thing is to make sure you wear it the right way. You want to fold it into a triangle and roll it slightly so it sits firmly against the neck, then knot it comfortably in the front. You can roll it completely or let it hang out a bit for your own style.
The downside though is the neckerchief is kind of unnecessary and looks a bit ridiculous. If you’re going to wear it with a coat, why not just wear an actual scarf? With a collared shirt, it makes you look like a cowboy.
And if you’re wearing one with a t-shirt or tank top, well that just looks stupid. When I think of neck scarfs, honestly I think of an old lady wearing them. And when I think of handkerchiefs, it reminds me of my grandfather who wasn’t wearing one for fashion, but was using it to blow his nose into.
So what is the final verdict on this men’s accessory? For now, the jury is still out on it, mostly because of its unique style. If going against the fashion grain feels right, then the neckerchief ultimately is the right choice.
